National Geographic – Dark Matter Matters

This month’s National Geographic had an interesting article on Einstein and the evolving universe called “Beyond the Big Bang.” The article is a good one and I’’m not going to write about all of it. Instead I want to expound upon an idea that I had in college and have been tinkering with for years, and of course I’’ll be piggy backing off of the article on Einstein in hopes that doing so will give some credibility to my delusion, or illusion or illumination… you decide.

““Something out there holds swarms of galaxies together and keeps their stars from flying apart, but scientists still haven’t learned what this invisible substance (dark matter) is, ” the caption to the article illustration begins. A few sentences later it concludes, “”Cosmologists are searching for the identity of dark matter, trying to detect the elusive substance responsible for arranging everything we see in the sky.””

I’’m not Einstein. When I think of Physics I think of PE not the mechanics of space, time, and other dimensions. But I have this idea that if somebody wants to run with it feel free because if it is true – WOW! (BTW if it does hold water toss a bone my way – I could use the encouragement) Of course I’’m getting ahead of myself… first, the notion.

Have you ever read a verse in the Bible and go “cool that sounds neat.” Then later on you read it again and it takes on a whole new meaning.

One such verse is a one I heard and sang a thousand times growing up. Acts 17:28 ““For in Him we live and move and have our being.”” Even now I am humming the song in my head ““Make a joyful noise, sing unto the Lord…””

I digress.

But read the verse again… ““In Him we live and move.”” Did Jesus eat us all for lunch and we didn’’t notice? Are we all swirling around in the stomach of the almighty. If not, then what is this verse saying? Is it just a nice thought?

What about this verse, “”And He (God) put all things under His (Christ) feet, and gave Him to be the head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.”” Ephesians 1:22-23

“Fills all in all?” Sounds nice, but what does it mean?

And finally … “”He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible … All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.””  Colossians 1:15-17

In Him all things consist?!

Again, did we get consumed while no one was watching? Or is all this Pauline talk just fanciful, colorful language?

What if these statements are to be taken literally? What if we do indeed live and move and have our being inside of Christ? What if Jesus does fill all in all? What if all things consist in Him?

What if Jesus is all matter, or all matter IS Jesus? To put it another way, what if Jesus is dark matter, the universal force that cosmologists blame for creating this universe, holding it all together and filling it all in all?

Like I said this is an idea that I’’ve been tinkering with since college. I don’’t have it all worked out, but I have done some research. Take for instance…

All of life is made up of matter. Matter is made up of molecules. Molecules are made up of atoms. Atoms are made up of electrons, protons and neutrons. Electrons spin around the nucleus (protons and neutrons) at a tremendous distance. To illustrate, if the nucleus was the size of an orange at home plate in a MLB stadium, the electrons would be the size of a pea circling the nucleus from outside of the ballpark. In other words, there is a LOT of space inside of an atom. It has been theorized that if you removed all of the empty space in matter you could condense every automobile in America into the size of a bowling ball. A VERY heavy bowling ball, that no gutter could hold (which would be good news for my bowling game).

So back to the atom. Inside of the electrons, neutrons and protons are even smaller particles that scientists call quarks. It is at this point that things get freaky. When scientists try to find what makes up the quark (which is the material that makes electrons and company, which make up the atoms, which makes up the molecules which makes all the matter in the universe) they find nothing. Just a mysterious force.

Some weird force that holds all things together. Something in which all things consist.

To come at this notion from one more angle just because it can’’t hurt or possibly confuse anyone any more than they already are (how’’s that for justification?).

The Eucharist. Communion. Some Christians believe that the bread and wine are THE real body and blood of Christ. Others see it as symbolic only and there are a thousands variations between these two views. What if… What if they are both right? What if it is symbolic AND the actual blood and body? And by “actual” I mean that EVERYTHING is the body and blood of Christ because everything is in Him and held together BY Him.

This is not lite reading tonight. Of course I think there is some deep elusive truth to all of this. I don’’t think I’’ve nailed it but I’’m trying. If you have any thoughts, ideas, or problems with this theory or notion please leave some feedback or drop me a line.

I’’ll probably revise this entry once I get a good nights sleep and reread it. So be warned if you come back and it all of a sudden makes sense. Either I rewrote it or you need to see a shrink. ;>)
