Something in me really wants to believe in the message that Rob Bell gives in his book Love Wins.
Unfortunately, I kinda have this previous relationship with Jesus so I’m going to have to go with what He said.
Hell has always been an uncomfortable thought for me. So uncomfortable that I’ve dedicated my life to sharing the Good News to people so that they don’t have to go there.
Universalism has its appeal. And I’ve known a number of people that have consumed the fruit, but I can’t bring myself to bite into it just because I want it to be true.
So I have to go with Jesus on this thing. I have many questions, and in the back of my mind I hold out hope that maybe universalists are right. To be honest, my own beliefs about salvation aren’t purely orthodox either (if b then c?) but I won’t start to cut and paste scripture until I find a version that makes me comfortable.
Jesus promised eternal life to them that believe and eternal judgement for those who reject Him. Now there is a third group of people that have never heard and on this group I have my theories, but on the first two groups there isn’t much room for debate.
While the words of Jesus may seem harsh, they are both true and loving. Compromising this may make someone sound loving but in the end this tinkling bell rings hollow.
