Charisma, Communique, and Hampton Roads

Focus Magazine

Nostalgia - Not one of the most inspired articles, but I love the title.

Hampton Roads Christian

What is Y2K? What to expect? And how should Christians respond? - Timely articles at the time, now it is fun to read and see where I was right on and where I was way off. As with any prediction or prophetic thing you are in a no win situation. If you're right then bad things happen, and if you're wrong then you get stoned. No wonder prophets have never been on People's 100 most loved celebrities.

Role Model of the Month - Jacqueline Singleton - Don't know if this interview led to my becoming a teacher but it sure didn't hurt.

Charisma

Keith Wheeler - This article was a tremendous challenge for me. It was a unique opportunity for me to freelance for Charisma. But that wasn't the challenging part. The challenging part was interviewing and writing about a man of God that I respect and admire deeply. My biggest fear was that my writing would stink and reflect poorly on Mr. Wheeler. I think it came out okay, and Mr. Wheeler said he enjoyed it. I breathed a sigh of relief when this article was published.

This article made it clear to me why it's so hard being a journalist writing on famous people. You either tend to be fawning (Ms. Streisand everything you do is perfect) or ultra-critical (Mother Theresa, now what about the poor and dying in America?). Either way, you miss the big picture.

Communique

Opening editorial columns (or how to write a good PR pieces - without even trying): Notes from the Other Side and its sequel the Award for BU (with current thoughts on the BU Award). Alumni Questionaire, Chillicothe Review, Resurrection Review.

The first publication that I had full control of. This newsletter was sent to ORU alumni and so I published in it two of my most pro-ORU articles. Especially funny when compared to the Signature Files. I find it interesting that as long as ORU told me "NO" and censored my writings (which, I don't necessarily disagree with - I'm no ACLU member) I wrote neutral if not subtly subversive articles. But when I finally had the freedom to write and print what I wanted I turned out two very positive ORU articles. I see this same pattern with my students. As long as I tell them what to do they tend to rebel. When I give them responsibility they bloom and tend to be very cooperative.
